Mastercam Basics — A Getting Started Guide

Finding your way around Mastercam
New users typically start by getting comfortable with Mastercam's interface: the ribbon-style toolbar, the File menu (referred to as the "Backstage"), and the various managers — including the Toolpaths Manager, Levels Manager and Planes Manager — that dock around the graphics window. Mastercam also lets users customise the Quick Access Toolbar, remap keyboard shortcuts, and adjust the ribbon layout to match their own working style.
Organising geometry
Levels work like layers, letting users group, show, hide and reassign geometry as a part gets more complex. Planes control the working orientation for drawing and machining — important once a part needs to be approached from more than one side, or on more than one axis.
Selecting geometry for machining
Before Mastercam can generate a toolpath, it needs to know exactly which edges, curves or solid faces to machine — this is called chaining. Mastercam supports both wireframe chaining (selecting curves and lines) and solid chaining (selecting faces and loops directly from a solid model), with on-screen direction arrows showing which side of the chain the cutter will follow.
From geometry to cutting motion
A toolpath is the route Mastercam calculates for a cutting tool to follow across a part. Setting one up generally follows the same sequence regardless of module: choose a machine type, define your stock (the raw material block or bar), chain the geometry to be cut, pick a toolpath strategy (for milling, a common starting point is a 2D Contour toolpath), and set feeds, speeds and tooling.
One of Mastercam's defining features is associativity — the link between the part model and its toolpaths. If the part geometry changes, associated toolpaths can be recalculated rather than reprogrammed from scratch, which matters a great deal once you're managing revisions on real production parts.
Checking a toolpath before it reaches the machine
Mastercam offers two levels of on-screen checking before a program goes anywhere near a machine tool. Backplot gives a fast schematic playback of tool motion. Verify — run through Mastercam Simulator — goes further, simulating actual material removal against the stock, tool and holder, so gouges, collisions or leftover stock can be caught early.
Turning a toolpath into machine code
Posting (or post processing) is the step that converts Mastercam's internal toolpath data into the G-code/NC code your specific machine control can read. A post processor — matched to your machine and controller — handles this translation, and the resulting NC program can typically be reviewed or edited before it's run.
